City Diner, Metairie, LA Report #2

I’ve passed this place a million times in my life and never noticed it until a friend of mine told me about it a few months ago.  When you walk into the joint it looks like it’s been there since the 1960’s, but it’s only been around since 2008.  The place has lived a hard life.

Strawberry jam is the Cadillac of jams/jellies to me.  One thing I hate is when I go into a place and all you see is grape, apple, or some mixed fruit crap as your only jelly options.  Then when you ask for strawberry jam they look at you like you’re asking for their first born kid or something.  Well, right away I noticed this place had PLENTY of strawberry jam!  It’s the simple things that makes me happy.

There were numerous interesting things on the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The place is open 24 hours.  But we were there for breakfast.  We decided on the Big Country Breakfast and the Crab Cake Benedict.

The Crab Cake dish came without pancakes and I MUST have pancakes for breakfast so I was going to order a side of them, but the waitress warned against it since the other breakfast came with three.  And these three are NOT your normal size pancakes.

The crab cakes over the polenta cakes were delicious.  No jumbo lump, flavorless, pasteurized crab meat imported from Thailand.  These were full of the stringy, claw crab meat from Lake Pontchartrain blue crabs that are bursting with flavor and crabby goodness!

Big breakfast was pretty good too.

Then there are the pancakes.  They only come in one size, gigantic.  When I walked in and saw the pizza boxes I assumed they served pizza.  They don’t.  Those are for you to take the pancakes home, which you will unless you bring a crowd.  They come on a pizza pan and all you can do is slice into them like a cake and serve.  Huge is always good, but do they taste good?  I remember getting pancakes at the Tiffin Inn out on Vets before they shut down and they were like flavorless sponges.  These are pretty good.  Great texture and flavored with something I can’t put my finger on.  Kind of like a vanilla flavor.  But again, good, and served with warm syrup and whipped butter.  Very good place and I’ll be back to try some of the lunch and dinner items.

Back to try something besides breakfast.  The loaded fries were delicious!  Plenty of bacon, cheese, sour cream and a really good brown gravy.

The hot sausage “po-boy”, comes on jalapeño cheese bread, which in my opinion makes it NOT a po-boy!  They come on French bread.  No matter.  The jalapeño cheese bread very good.   As were the onion rings.

The sampler platter came with red beans, gumbo, jambalaya, alligator sausage and garlic bread.  I didn’t care for the gumbo at all.  In fact, the jambalaya tasted more like gumbo!  White rice with meats added to it and some kind of juice at the bottom of the bowl.  The red beans were just ok.  The alligator sausage was yummy.

Even though this was lunch time we had to finish off with one of their pancakes that are so big you have to slice them like a pizza!

  1. Unfortunately I apparently can’t “like” your post unless I’m signed in. I closed the business website and thus the email attached to it and wordpress and I am not going to open another blog. Anyway…LIKE. lol

    1. Hmmmm. Not sure why you couldn’t like it. I have my technical team working on the problem. Your issue should be resolved by Christmas. By the way, my technical team consist of a guy named Punjab and he lives in Pakistan. I only pay him $2.40 a day so he works pretty slow. Lazy bastard.
