BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, Slidell, LA Report #62

BJ’s is great.  Unfortunately for me they don’t have one in New Orleans.  The only three in Louisiana are in Slidell, Baton Rouge and Lafayette.  I had to attend a family funeral in Mississippi, so on the way back we decided to stop at the one in Slidell for dinner.

As you’d guess by the name they have a huge selection of beer.  The “What’s on Tap” menu on the wall was too big to get in one pic and there are 48 taps (if I counted right) behind the bar.  I don’t drink, but if I did, I’d probably love this place even more!

I did notice besides beer they also brew a line of sodas.  I tried the vanilla cream soda. Best cream soda I ever had.  Really carbonated with that smooth, creamy cream soda flavor.

They say they’re famous for their Pizookies.  They press cookie dough into a pan, bake it, then top it with ice cream.  What’s better than a warm, fresh baked cookie topped with premium ice cream?  We had the Triple Chocolate Made With Ghirardelli.  Seriously yummy.

The menu was literally a book.  24 pages long, so I couldn’t take pics of everything, but I took pics of a few things that we didn’t try but caught my eye.  The Seared Ahi Salad looked great.  Besides the pic on the menu I saw one come out the kitchen and it looked just as impressive.  I love soup served in fresh bread bowl and they have a selection of them.  Chili too.  You don’t often see bison burgers on menus but they have one.  The Cherry Chipotle Glazed Salmon sounds great.  We had the cherry chipotle sauce on the boneless nuggets on our app and it was great.  Finally, for vegetarians, there’s a cauliflower taco.  I’m no vegetarian so I’d NEVER order that, but I thought it sounded interesting.

Now, what we did have.  This is the only place I’ve ever found avocado eggrolls.  Avocado, cream cheese, sundried tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, chipotle peppers and a sweet tamarind sauce for dipping.  If you don’t LOVE avocado, don’t get these.  I happen to love avocado, so these are incredible to me.  I don’t get here often but when I do I have to order these.

Instead of just ordering the avocado eggrolls we ordered the Best Beginnings Appetizer Combo, which came with them, plus boneless wings, mozzarella sticks and spinach and artichoke dip.  The waitress spit out a long list of sauces we could have gotten on the wings but I didn’t hear anything after cherry chipotle because I knew that’s what I wanted.  It was delicious, as was everything else.

The meatballs and spaghetti were very good.  The meatballs were seasoned good with the perfect amount of breadcrumbs in them.  Each pasta dish comes with a small, hot garlic bread knot which is really tasty.  We got a wedge salad as a side but they served it upside down!  I like it served cut side up so the blue cheese dressing seeps into the head of lettuce.  Besides that, it was ok.  Nothing special.  Could have used a little more salad dressing.

With their pizza you have the choice of deep dish or what they call Tavern-Cut thin crust.  See the pic above to see what they mean by tavern-cut.  I like how the menu on the deep dish side specifies how many slices you get with each size pizza.  We opted for the deep dish Gourmet Five Meat.  Nothing outstanding about the pizza, but it’s good.

Now the Deep Dish Ziti was outstanding.  Plenty of meat in it, perfectly al dente pasta, an interesting blend of marinara and Alfredo sauce and nice and cheesy.  I really enjoyed it.

Great place great atmosphere, good food, I highly recommend it.
