Crabby Jack’s, New Orleans, LA Report #126

 

If you Google this place to get the address, they’ll tell you it’s in New Orleans.  It’s actually not.  It’s a short distance into Jefferson Parish from the Orleans Parish line but not in an incorporated city, so I guess saying it’s in New Orleans is the best they can do.

But who cares about that?  They make great poboy sandwiches.  I hadn’t been there in a few years but on prior occasions I had the Slow Roasted Duck and the Cochon De Lait poboy.  Both were delicious.  I’ve never tried anything else there so today I also tried the  Chicken & Andouille Gumbo and the jambalaya.

I didn’t care much for the jambalaya.  I hate overcooked rice but I also hate undercooked rice.  The rice wasn’t really still crunchy or anything, but to use a pasta term it was still pretty “al dente”.  It still had a little fight left in it.  In my opinion it should have been cooked a little softer for jambalaya.  And it was really “tomatoey”.  That’s not meat on the fork in the picture, but chunks of tomato.  Pasty tasting tomatoes at that.  If you like a tomatoey jambalaya you’d like this one.

The gumbo tasted more like a stew than gumbo.  When I was a kid my mom made a chicken and smoked sausage stew which was delicious, and if they labeled this as chicken and andouille stew, it would also be a delicious stew!   All in all it wasn’t bad. Just tasted like meat in a brown gravy instead of a gumbo.

Today felt like a fried seafood kind of day so I got a shrimp poboy.  Delicious.  Nice fresh French bread, dressed nicely and plenty of well seasoned, crispy fried shrimp.  The fries are good too.  They don’t put any silly batter on their fries but serve them with a seasoned salt which is very good.

So if your in the mood for great poboys, I highly recommend this place.

A slow roasted duck po-boy with a side of calamari.  Not sure why they don’t have Marinara but try the Asian Plum sauce with the calamari.  Delicious.  Onion rings are great, too.
