I belong to this Facebook group called, “Where NOLA Eats”, (NOLA is short for New Orleans, Louisiana). Every time someone asked for recommendations on a great seafood place, this place is mentioned. I was in the seafood mood today, so I figured I’d go check it out. I live in New Orleans, so I got my passport out and made the journey to Harahan, LA.
The place looks huge, but the left half of the building is a market, where they sell seafood. The dining room is pretty small. I noticed something right away that I love. A roll of paper towels on the table. I hate asking for napkins. Or pretending I’m being affectionate to my wife and rubbing her leg under the table to clean my hands off.
Anyway, to the food. We started off with the Eggplant Harahan. Fried eggplant medallions stuffed with a crabmeat dressing, and topped with a Parmesan cheese sauce with a few shrimp. This was really good. I’d be happy just eating the stuffing as stuffed crabs. Great dish.
Then we hit a snafu. My dining partner wasn’t too hungry so she ordered a bowl of gumbo. When the waitress brought it out, she explained they didn’t have any rice so they were serving the gumbo with toasted French bread. They opened for dinner at 5:00PM and we got there about 5:30PM. How can you be out of rice a half hour after you open?
My dining partner didn’t want gumbo with no rice, so she got the Shrimp and Corn Bisque instead. She said it was pretty good.
I ordered the soft shell crab poboy and decided to get their Home Fries to go with it. They are small potatoes boiled in crab boil, quartered, then deep fried nice and crisp and tossed in a garlic butter. I really liked these. A nice alternative to french fries.
As for the soft shell crab poboy, it was probably the biggest soft shell crab I had ever seen. The bread was very fresh and the sandwich was dressed perfectly. And the crab wasn’t over battered. I hate when places do that. Put so much batter on them when you’re eating the legs you can’t even taste crab. Just batter. This was the best soft shelled crab poboy I ever had! Delicious.
Great place. I definitely recommend it.
