Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que, Denver, CO Report #163

I was in Denver, Colorado, with no car, and hungry.  I saw a shopping and restaurant area a few blocks from my hotel so I headed that way on foot.  I saw a bunch of fast food chain places, like Sonic, IHOP, Smashburger, etc., but I avoid chains if possible.  Then I saw this place.  I’ve traveled the country a good bit and have never seen a Famous Dave’s, and BBQ sounded like a good idea, so I stepped in.  As soon as I saw the menu I knew this was a chain.  I normally don’t review chains unless there is something really worth mentioning.  I found that here!

Love the décor of the place.  Really nice.  I actually ended up eating here TWICE in one day.  First, I had the three meat BBQ combo.  Rib tips, chopped pork, and a chicken leg quarter, with cole slaw, mac n cheese and a cornbread muffin.  Everything was pretty good! This was lunch.

Later that day for dinner, my dining partner, who had the car, and I had the BBQ Nachos.  Tortilla chips topped with house smoked cheddar cheese, cheese sauce, Dave’s “award winning” chili, and chopped pork.  You also had a choice of beef brisket or pulled chicken.  All that was topped with lettuce, tomatoes, fresh jalapeño slices, sour cream and their “Rich & Sassy” BBQ sauce.  Really good!

The way I had been eating I figured a salad was in order, so I decided on the Chicken Chopped Salad.  You had a choice of grilled chicken breast or BBQ pulled chicken (I got the pulled chicken), over lettuce with cilantro, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, roasted corn, black beans, tortilla strips, their Rich & Sassy BBQ sauce and a lime chipotle dressing.  Nothing was light about this meal though.  The thing was HUGE.  And delicious.

But what I really had to write about was the bread pudding.  At lunch, the waitress asked me if I had room for dessert.  I asked, “How’s the bread pudding”?  She said it was made inhouse and delicious.  So I got it.  As I was eating it, she passed by and asked how it was.  I told her I was from new Orleans, so I know bread pudding, and this was one of the best I ever had outside Louisiana.  In fact, it was one of the best I ever had period!

Great place.  I highly recommend it.

  1. Dave’s is from up here in Minnesota. I’m not into barbecue, but have gone there and thought the chicken was excellent. They are making changes – online ordering, delivery and “ghost stores” . Small footprint kitchens for preparing delivery To attract millennials. New barbecue master who is trying new additions to the menu.

  2. We went to a Dave’s in Virginia when we were on a trip. We loved it, even though, like you said, it’s a chain. However, they aren’t in our area either!
Great review, makes me wish I could order some more!!
