Gendusa’s Italian Market, Kenner, LA Report # 256

Someone I work with lives pretty far from this place, and drives miles past a lot of good Italian restaurants to come here.  Now I know why.

Not a huge place.  There’s a small building next door to the main restaurant to handle overflow diners, which is a where we sat.  I was wondering if our service would suffer because we weren’t in the main dining room, but it didn’t.  Very friendly staff here.

The menu is pretty simple and straight forward.  Luckily for us Friday is seafood night!  Seafood Lasagna, Ravioli, Crabmeat Cannelloni and a fried redfish filet over pasta special that we saw brought out to a table.  It looked fantastic!

And judging by the food we had, it would be.  We decided on Fried Calamari, the John Gotti pizza and  Meat Balls and Spaghetti.  We also wanted to try one of the seafood specials.  We were torn between the Seafood Lasagna and the Crabmeat Canneloni.  Our waitress told us the Canneloni was always on the menu, so she recommended we Seafood Lasagna, and boy am I glad she did!

And the food:

The calamari was great.  And the Marinara sauce they served it with was fantastic!  I’m sure they make it themselves.  Hard to believe that came out of a jar.  When they came to take that empty plate off the table we kept that sauce!

With the two entrées we got a House salad and a Caesar.  The House salad came with cheese, salami and artichoke hearts on it.  The veggies in both salads couldn’t have been cooler and fresher.  Very good salads.

Now, there were three of us in out party, and besides the pizza we ordered two entrées.   We got through not even half of each dish and were stuffed!  The portions are huge!

The seafood lasagna was outstanding.  Full of shrimp, crawfish and crabmeat.  You could taste the cream in the sauce, but it wasn’t overly rich.  And nice and cheesy.  One of the best lasagnas I’ve ever had!

The pizza was excellent.  Ultra crispy crust, and plenty of Italian sausage, pepperoni, ham and Genoa salami.  Awesome sauce too.  The chunks of Italian sausage were huge on it.  They don’t know how to do small in this place!

The plate you see the meatballs and spaghetti on is a huge dinner plate.  The meatballs are almost the size of softballs!  And about the tenderest meatballs I’ve ever had.  Seasoned deliciously, with more of that tasty red sauce.

I planned on trying a Cappuccino Cannoli for dessert, but that wasn’t going to happen.  I was so stuffed I just wanted to crawl under the table and take a nap on the floor.

You’ve got to try this place.  I can’t recommend it any higher!
