Turmeric Indian Cuisine, Gretna, LA Report #264

I was trying to figure out the last time I had Indian cuisine.  I remembered it was at a place uptown called Nirvana.  I also remembered I went while I was at work.  I last worked up there in 2004, so its been over 15 years.  That’s too long to deprive my palate of any cuisine!

I live on the Westbank of the Mississippi River now, where this place is located.  I’ve heard good things so it was time to check it out.

What hits you as you walk up to the door is the strong smell of spices in the air.  Lovely!  We decided on the Lasuni Gobi, Samosa Chaat and Garlic Shrimp for appetizers.  I happened to be dining with two vegetarians.  They ordered the Dal Tadka and Dal Makhani for entrées, while I went with something that had once been walking an baa-ing.  Lamb Tikka Masala.  We ordered three different kinds of Naan bread.  Garlic, Chili and Paneer.  For dessert we had Gulab Jamun and Kheer.

And the food!

There’s not a whole lot to say about the food except we really enjoyed everything!  It all was delicious.

I’m not a vegetarian, but the Lasuni Gobi, which was cauliflower,  lightly battered and fried with a honey garlic sauce, was so good I’d order it again.

The lamb was fork tender, and the sauce was very good over the Basmati rice.  I tried both of the Dal (lentil) dishes.  Yummy!

One thing about the desserts.  They’re very small!  So if you’re wondering if you have room for dessert the answer is, “yes”.  You do.  Small but delicious.

The Gulab Jamun were a couple of fried dough balls in a syrup.  Looking at the menu now I see they said three pieces, but we got two!  I’ve got to demand the one they shorted me next time I go back!  They tasted something like beignets.  Very good.

The Kheer was like a rice pudding, which I love.  It was also very good.  Not very sweet, but a great flavor.

Great place!  I highly recommend it!

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT:

Tried their lunch buffet today.  It was pretty good, but I wouldn’t eat it again.  Ordering off the menu is the way to go at this place.

  1. I love Indian food but the French don’t like spicy food so the Indian restaurants are all a bit samey. I find it best to cook it at home. However, if I have a trip back to UK, there are some fabulous Indian restaurants.
