Toast, Gretna, LA Report #268

UPTOWN LOCATION CLOSED

REPORTS ON GRETNA LOCATION INCLUDED

This place is small and very popular, which means one thing.  A wait for a table.  If you Google them you can pick one of their three locations and get on an online wait list via Yelp.  The 5th picture above shows what it looks like when you check your status on your smartphone.  About 10 minutes after I took that screenshot, we were seated.

It was worth the wait!  I love that the menu is one page.  I’ve always been a fan of places that do a few things well, instead of a ton of things mediocre.  Being named “Toast”, you’ll find some of the best fixings on the tables to deal with toast!  Real butter, cinnamon, and my favorite.  House made strawberry jam!  It was quite good.  You have a choice of sourdough or multigrain toast.

We decided on the following, plus an order of Lyonnaise potatoes:

My dining partner had the Classic Breakfast, with two scrambled eggs, bacon, grits and a biscuit.  She commented that there was no way that was only two eggs.  Our waitress agreed with her, saying they always throw in a little extra.

Being a coffee connoisuer, she also commented on how good the coffee was.  The waitress said they use the same kind of coffee as the PJ’s coffee chain, but grind the beans right before they brew it.  Looks like that makes a difference.

I had the steak melt sandwich.  If I’ve ever had a better steak sandwich, I can’t think of where right now.  It was delicious!  It comes with a side salad with a rea light honey Dijon dressing.  But I think next time I’d substitute the Lyonnaise potatoes for the salad.  They were also delicious, and went great with the steak sandwich.

I love crepes.  I like my crepes like my women.  Simple.  When I looked at the menu and saw “Sugar & Butter”, I thought that was about as simple as you can get!  It comes with house made whipped cream.  It was ok, but I think it was a little too simple.  Next time I’ll go with one of the fancier ones.  Like Banana Nutella!

I had never heard of Aebleskivers.  Since the menu said puffed pancakes, I was imagining a flat, but puffy, airy pancake.  I was wrong.  They’re little pancake balls.

I looked them up.  They’re Danish desserts.  The name literally means apple slices in Danish, but they rarely have apple in them.  Now you know something I didn’t know, and I bet you didn’t know either!

They were pretty good.  We got them with the lemon curd, but I ended up asking for some maple syrup, and then I ended up putting their strawberry jam on them!  Pretty yummy.

Great place!  I recommend it!

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT:

I was happy to see this location open after the one Uptown shut down. And since I live on the Westbank this one is closer to my house!

From the outside this one looked pretty small. I was surprised to see how big it was once we were inside. There’s a big, covered deck in the back if you’d prefer to dine outside, and a playset for kids. Very nice!

Breakfast Sandwich
Hanger Steak
Lemon Curd Crepe

My dining partner had the breakfast sandwich. She said it was delicious! I asked for a taste, so she broke of a little piece of the bread for me to try. I’ve never been good with the metric system, but I’d estimate the piece of bread she gave me was about 1 centimeter in diameter. Even though it was that tiny I was able to taste how hearty and buttery that bread was. A great bread makes for a fantastic sandwich, and this was a great bread!

My steak breakfast was excellent! A generous serving of hanger steak covered with aioli (they asked if I wanted it on the side, but I told them just slap it on top), two eggs over easy and some great potatoes.

Finally, the lemon curd crepe. A thing of beauty. The only thing is it could have used more lemon curd. The lemon curd you see on top was it. None inside. So if you order it you might want to ask for extra, because it was really yummy.

Delicious breakfast. I recommend the place!

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT:

Back in today for breakfast. Here’s a link to their menu: https://www.toastneworleans.com/gretna-menu.html

  We decided on:

   < THE FOOD >

Fried Crawfish Toast with Scrambled Eggs
Catfish and Grits with Over Easy Eggs

The fried crawfish toast is awesome. As far as the toast part, just the bread was really good! Combine that with the caramelized onions, veggies, cheese, eggs, sauce and a generous portion of fried crawfish, this dish is a winner!

They fry their catfish perfectly, and you can’t help but notice they put cream in the grits. Another excellent dish.

The waffle came out piping hot. They give you plenty of butter which I put to good use. As you can see in the last picture that’s how a properly buttered waffle should look! I detected what I thought was a lemon flavor in the waffles. I asked our waitress if they add a little lemon zest or juice to the batter. She said they didn’t. They make their own batter which she said ferments a bit, and that gives it that slightly acidic taste. I thought the fact they did that and the flavor it gives the waffles was fantastic! You gotta try them!

  Another wonderful breakfast here.
