Grand Buffet, Harahan, LA Report #319

I’m not a big fan of Chinese food buffets. But I had just fasted 12 hours for bloodwork for a physical today. That left me absolutely starving. In fact, I was so hungry I almost bit into the nurses arm that was drawing my blood! When I got out of there this place was nearby, and “all you can eat” sounded good to me!

How do you work an all you can eat buffet during a pandemic? They serve you. The buffet lines are covered with plexiglass on the customer’s side, and a server walks down the line with you asking you what you want. They dish it out for you and hand you the plate at the end. Works rather well.

The food!

I had wonton soup, fried rice, General Tso’s Chicken, some kind of shrimp dish, lo mein, coconut shrimp, fried shrimp, mussels, sweet and sour chicken, a chicken stick, potatoes, Crab Rangoon, boiled shrimp and vanilla ice cream.

The best things I had were the General Tso’s Chicken, the mussels, the chicken stick and the vanilla ice cream.

I liked the sauce on the General’s chicken. It was a nice sweet and sour sauce. It was also hot and very fresh tasting.

I’m not sure what’s in that mayonnaisey sauce on the mussels on the half shell, but it was good!

The chicken stick was delicious! Dark meat, which can still dry out on a buffet, but it was seasoned well, grilled nicely and very juicy.

They only had vanilla ice cream. The machine was in an off limits area to customers, so you had to ask your server to bring you a bowl. I was expecting the non-creamy, ice milk tasting stuff you often get at buffets, but that wasn’t the case. Very creamy ice cream!

The worst things I had were the wonton soup, lo mein and Crab Rangoon.

The wonton soup and lo mein were flavorless.

I remember the first time I had Crab Rangoon back in the 1980’s. Guess what it had in it? CRAB! Then they started using that fake crab meat, and then some places just started going with cream cheese. This is one of those places. They should just call it Cream Cheese Rangoon. Not a hint of even crab flavor. Just cream cheese fried in a wonton wrapper.

Chinese buffet wise, this place is ok. At least when I left I didn’t feel like biting anyone anymore!
