Santa Fe, New Orleans, LA Report #336

You ever walk down the sidewalk and think, “I’d like to sit out here and eat in that little strip of grass (or dirt) between the sidewalk and the street”? Well, now’s your chance to do it! If you come to Santa Fe.

This place is located on one of the prettiest streets in the city, Esplanade Avenue. It’s lined with majestic, old oak trees. They’re only doing outdoor dining right now. We had reservations for 5:30PM. Here in New Orleans, in the summer the temperature could easily be in the upper 80s or even 90s at that time. But tonight it was about 68 degrees and really beautiful. And dining outside under the Christmas lights was really nice!

The food here isn’t your typical Tex-Mex kind of fare. I’d describe it as more upscale. And delicious! Before we came in I looked at the menu like a kid looking through a Christmas catalog. I was excited. I was also in a seafood mood. I planned on ordering empanadas, seafood nachos, and the seafood enchiladas for my entrée.

But when we arrived there was something on the menu that wasn’t on the online menu. Grilled octopus. I love octopus. I asked my dining partner if she’d help me eat it and she said, “Do I look like a damned OCTOPUS eater to you”? I wasn’t going to touch that one.

When the waitress came I asked her how big the portion of octopus was. She told me it was a good bit of octopus. So I did something I’m normally too stupid to do. I showed restraint. I didn’t order the seafood enchiladas. So we went with the empanadas, seafood nachos, grilled octopus, and my dining partner ordered a taco salad.

I apologize for the darkness of the pictures, but for some reason I couldn’t get the flash on my iPhone to work. Probably because I just paid it off 3 months ago so now things are going to start going wrong.

The empanadas came two to an order, and you had a choice of beef or crawfish. We asked if we could get one of each and our waitress said that was no problem! They both were delicious. The crawfish one tasted like a good crawfish pie, turned into an empanada.

The nachos were great. Full of shrimp and crawfish.

My dinning partner loved her taco salad, but regretted ordering it since we had so much food with the appetizers. She’s young, and unlike me hasn’t matured enough to have restraint when ordering food.

I’ve never had octopus prepared like this. I have no idea how they got it so tender. Seasoned nicely, with a great grilled flavor. The dish comes with a little side salad.

I wanted to try the Tres Leches cake but I was stuffed! There’s also a Venezuelan style Seafood paella on the menu which I’m dying to try. Next time.

Great place! I definitely recommend it.
