Acropolis On Freret, New Orleans, LA Report #345

I looked up the word “Acropolis”. It’s defined as, “A citadel or fortified part of an ancient Greek city, typically built on a hill”. I guess that would imply this is a Greek restaurant. Their website says they serve food from the Mediterranean region. After looking at the menu, it’s obviously a pretty wide swath of the Mediterranean. You can get everything from pizza, Veal Marsala and spaghetti and meatballs, to hummus, baba ghanoush and gyros. That’s just fine with me!

We decided on the Acropolis Appetizer Platter, a pepperoni pizza, the Gyro Platter, Veal Marsala, and a Baklava Sundae.


They start you off with a little bowl of some pickled root vegetables. I tasted them and had no idea what they were. I asked our waitress and she said either turnips or radishes. I’ve never see radishes that big so I’m guessing turnips. Very tart. Maybe they’re a palate cleanser? Next time I’ll pass on these.

The appetizer platter was great! Loved the spinach and cheese pie. Chopped spinach and cheese baked in a flaky, crisp phyllo dough. I could eat ten of these.

My least favorite thing on the platter was the baba ghanoush, and it was good! The hummus and tzatziki were just so much better!

The pepperoni pizza was fantastic. Good and cheesy. Just how I like it.

A little Caesar salad came with our entrées. My dining partner had the Gyro Platter with rice pilaf. She enjoyed it.

I had the Veal Marsala. Seriously yummy. Very tender veal, and you could really taste the Marsala in the sauce.

I love Baklava. I’ve never seen it as a sundae on a menu, so I had to try it. Very nutty Baklava with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream and some chocolate syrup. Delicious.

As a side note, if you aren’t in the mood for any of the desserts on their menu, Piccola Gelateria is right across the street. They have excellent gelato.

Great dinner tonight. I shall return.

Back already! When we were here a little over a week ago we saw this brunch menu and said we have to come back to try it. Particularly that Crawfish Hash. We normally do a brunch on Sundays. We decided on:


SWEET JESUS that Crawfish Hash was delicious! Plenty of crawfish tails served over some very crisp little cubed potatoes, with an over easy egg on top. My favorite crawfish breakfast dish up until now had been the Atchafalaya at Tout de Suite Café. I think this may replace it!

The omelette was packed with big shrimp. They don’t skimp on the seafood here! And the pancakes were delicious. Great brunch spot!

Back again for Sunday brunch. We decided on:

My dining partner said the croissant sandwich was delicious.

My shrimp and grits sure were. The sauce on top of the grits was fantastic. But beware. The shrimp have tails on them! I couldn’t see that and plopped a big forkful of grits and a shrimp in my mouth, started chewing, and thought, “What the hell”? I hate when they do that. Just makes the dish harder to eat. But it was still great.

We both preferred the pancakes we had last time over the Greek donuts. These were something like beignets. A little chewier and not very sweet at all. Still very good.

Great place. You should try it!
