This place is way off the beaten path. You’ve got to be looking for it to find it. I happened to be perusing the restaurant section of Groupon looking for local deals and found one for this place, so I figured we’d give it a try. I’m always up for a good burger.
Unfortunately they’re only open for pick up or delivery. You call your order in, then go to that window (5th picture above) on the side of the building and ring a bell to pick it up. I have no idea what the inside of the place looks like.
I’m not sure why they call it “Big Poppa”. Maybe because everything here is bigger? Well, bigger isn’t always better.
We ordered a Big Poppa Burger, Big Poppa Bacon Cheeseburger, an order of Big Poppa Homemade Fries, vanilla milkshake and lemonade.
First, the drinks. My vanilla milkshake came with one of those fat smoothie straws. I love those because I hate when you get a delicious milkshake and try to suck it through a regular straw, but it’s so thick it won’t come through!
That wasn’t a problem here. A regular straw would have been fine. The shake was watery. It tasted like they put one scoop of vanilla ice cream in a blender with a LOT of milk and whipped it up.
My dining partner said her lemonade was too sweet. She had to add water to it before drinking it.
Next, the fries. I like my fries thin cut, fried crisp and just salted. These were as far from that as you could possibly get. I’ve had what’s called Jo Jo Potatoes before, and that’s what these were. Thick potato wedges with the peel. Good if you like those, but I don’t.
Finally, the burgers. When I was a kid we rarely went out to eat. It was a real treat when we’d go to Burger King or McDonald’s. I loved their hamburgers! I even had a shirt with, “twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepicklesonionsonasesemeseedbun” on it. Whenever we’d go out I’d beg to go there.
Well, my mom apparently took this as an insult to her culinary skills. She’d tell me she could make a burger much better than theirs! So she’d grab a couple fist fulls of ground meat, shape into a kind of a frisbee shaped huge meatball which didn’t come close to resembling a burger patty, fry it in a cast iron skillet, then slap it on regular white bread since I wasn’t worth buying hamburger buns for. Then tell me THAT’S a good burger. EAT IT! Lord I couldn’t wait to move out that house.
Anyway, that’s how these burger patties were. I thought they were just too big! And not really seasoned very well. Mine came with a slice of battered and fried bacon. Why, I’m not sure, but that was a nice little bonus.
If I go back here it’ll be to try the chicken and waffles. Not the burgers and fries.
