Carreta’s Grill, Metairie, LA Report #359

Today I had my taxes done. It’s a dark day. Always is. I always have to pay. As tradition has it, we always go to eat afterwards. It’s one of the few things that makes me feel better that’s legal.

Way back in Report #334, I explained that I was going to restaurants on this list that gives me hotel reward points when I dine at them. This place was on the list, not far from our tax preparer, and we were in the mood for Mexican. That’s why we chose it.

We decided on:

############### THE FOOD ###############

The complimentary salsa and chips they always give you were very good. The chips were very fresh. The cheese dip was also very good.

A few weeks back I had avocado fries for the first time in my life at a place called Table & Tap 5216. They were fantastic! So when I saw them on the menu here I ordered them again. I didn’t care for these as much. The avocados were sliced a little too big, and instead of a thin, crisp crust, they were battered a little too heavily.

My dining partner had the Chimichanga Dinner. She said it was ok but thought the ground beef in the chimichanga could have been seasoned better. And there was nothing special about the rice and beans.

I love Chili Rellenos. When I saw this Chili Ranchero dish, which is basically a Chili Relleno wrapped in Carne Asada, I had to give it a try. It was delicious! The meat was really tender with a great flavor. And the cheese stuffed Poblano pepper inside would have been great if it just had been served on it’s own.

The Sopapillas were ok. Nothing to get excited about.

Overall we enjoyed the place. And as hoped, filling my belly made me forget a little about the sting of the taxes.
