Café Zen, Gretna, LA Report #393

There’s a few restaurants in this little strip mall. Banana Blossom used to be located a few doors down from here until they moved. But then Jasmine Rice, another good Thai place, moved into their vacated spot. Being a regular customer of those places I kept seeing this restaurant, saying I’d give it a try one day. Tonight was the night!

My dining partner ordered a cup of Miso soup. We also decided on the fried octopus dumplings, beef bowl, lobster roll, baked salmon roll, and an Oshi Box.

My dining partner said his Miso soup was very good. He had the baked salmon roll too and really enjoyed it.

I grew up eating chicken gizzards and tripe, so I like proteins with a chewy texture. That’s why I like octopus. These dumplings were absolutely DELICIOUS! The octopus was chopped up into delightful chewy bits, and mixed with who knows what. Each had a little dab of I think a Japanese mayo on top. This was listed on the specials board, but I hope they have it regularly because I’ll definitely get it again!

The beef bowl was a disappointment. Really great flavor, but the problem was there was only a layer of very thinly shaved beef over the top of a LOT of rice. Being shaved so thin it was a few ounces of beef at best. And once it was gone, which was quick, you were left with nothing but a big bowl of rice.

The lobster roll also wasn’t something I’d brag about. They said it contained deep fried lobster tail, but if you could see it your eyes are much better than mine. They either sliced the lobster up really small, or they found a lobster with a tail the size of a crawfish! Overall the roll tasted good but I wouldn’t order it again.

The Oshi Box was yummy. First time I had a box with tuna, salmon and eel on top.

I’ll definitely be back for those octopus dumplings and a few other items on the menu I’d like to try.
