Los Compadres, Gretna, LA Report #403

The city of New Orleans is split in two by the Mississippi River. We refer to the two areas as the Eastbank and the Westbank. A lot of people from the Eastbank don’t like to go to the Westbank. Some actually look down on Westbankers!

Well, I was born and raised on the Eastbank. I was one of those who never went to the Westbank, until I moved there 24 years ago. When I got there I was like a child exploring the world! I quickly found El Paso Mexican Restaurant, which was right down the street from my house. Me and my family became regulars there and I didn’t check out many of the other Mexican restaurants on this side of the Mississippi.

I guess that’s why I never tried this place. It’s located at a major intersection, so I’ve driven past it a thousand times. But tonight, as always, I decided to take a risk for all of you. To risk having a bad meal trying a new place so I could tell y’all what it was like, therefore saving all of you a possible bad experience. Yes, that’s how selfless I am.

Pretty extensive menu here. I was in the meat and potatoes mood, so with the Carne Asada I got some cheese covered fries. Also, flan for dessert.

## THE FOOD ##

The chips and salsa were very good. Hot chips with some heft to them so they can stand up to any dip.

The first picture after the chips and salsa was what my table looked like after they brought everything out. I thought, “Good grief, didn’t I ONLY order two things”?

Those fries were great. I started off tasting those and had to force myself to stop eating them to get to everything else.

The Carne Asada was delicious. The beef was tender, flavorful, and covered with grilled onions. I love grilled onions. In fact, if I got hit by a bus, ended up brain dead, and had to live the rest of my life as a vegtable, the vegtable I’d want to be are grilled onions. I love them THAT much!

When I ordered my waitress asked me if I wanted tortillas. When you ask me if I want food the answer is always “Yes”. She asked what type and I requested flour. That’s what’s wrapped up in that foil pack. I cut up some beef, put it in tortillas with some sour cream, jalapeños, salsa and guacamole, then wrapped it up and ate most of it like that. Outstanding!

The last time I had flan was at a place called Golden Gate Bistro and I was a little disappointed in it. I decided to give flan another try. This one was yummy. Great texture, which is what I think I look for the most in flan.

Great place for Mexican. I recommend it!

After ordering we were told they were out of tamales and sopapillas. I shed a tear because I was very sad.

A while back I went to the place called Margaritas Mexican Cuisine. Click on the name to see that report. They made nachos with very light chips and lettuce, and it reminded me more of a taco salad than nachos. I LOVED IT! Nachos, especially with ground meat on them, can be a little heavy in my opinion. Too dense and too much fat with all the cheese and meat. I loved theirs and have been dying to get back there for them.

Well, this place does the same thing! And they were just as good. Loved them.

My dining partner had the chimichanga. She said it was great.

I had the mole burrito with steak. The mole sauce was very good and it was packed with steak! Hardly any rice in it.

Finally, the cheese enchilada was terrific.

We came in tonight not realizing every Wednesday was Queso Wednesday! You get a free small queso. The first picture is how the empty bowl looks when you finish it. I forgot to take a picture when it came out. It’s good!

They had tamales this visit so we tried one. They fill them with shredded pork. My dining partner prefers ground beef and didn’t like it. I thought it was just ok.

The Molcajete Especial was also just ok. It came out hot and bubbling and that bowl stayed hot forever! The chicken, which they give you the most of, was pretty dry. The shrimp and beef was ok. The best thing was probably the sausage. I wouldn’t order it again. I’d just rather go with fajitas.

I don’t care for red sauce, so we got the chili relleno with melted cheese on top. Melted cheese on top of anything is always good! The chimichanga was stuffed with ground beef, and I got a beef and cheese enchilada.

Everything was great. Another fantastic meal!
