Trey Yuen, Mandeville, LA Report #418

I’ve been hearing great things about this place for decades. By decades, I don’t mean 20 years or so ago. I mean the 1980’s! The only reason I’ve never been until now is it’s not in New Orleans, which is where I live. It’s located across Lake Pontchartrain in Mandeville, LA. Their original location was in Hammond, LA, which was even further from me! A friend of mine recently had dinner here and raved about it, so I figured it was time for me to take that drive over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge (second picture above) and check it out.

Lovely place! Kind of hidden back in the woods. Little ponds around it full of Koi and goldfish, and even a mountain with a waterfall! I can pretty much guarantee you won’t find anymore mountains with waterfalls in Southeast Louisiana.

The inside’s beautiful too. I love the high ceiling in the main dining room. We decided on:

========== THE FOOD! ==========

General Tso’s Chicken
Tong Cho Crawfish

Forever I’ve been searching for crab rangoon made with REAL crabmeat. Everywhere you go uses that imitation crabmeat. When I saw on the menu they use real crabmeat, I was as excited as a kid whose school just burned down!

Well, it wasn’t as great as I thought it’d be. It was good, but the cream cheese kind of hides the delicate flavor of the crabmeat.

My dining partner loves wonton soup. She thought this one was very good. The broth had a great flavor and there were plenty of ingredients in it.

The fried rice was yummy. Full of shrimp and pork, perfectly cooked rice, and that bowl they served it in kept it hot during the entire meal!

I’m not a general’s chicken fan but my dining partner loves it. She said this one was very good, but lacked spice. She likes her food spicy, like her men, which is why she’s lucky to have me!

I ordered the Tong Cho Crawfish because they said it was served in a Trey Yuen signature sauce, which is a sweet hot pepper garlic sauce. It was delicious. A nice mix of sweet and tart.

Pretty good dinner here tonight. If you’re in the neighborhood I’d recommend dropping in!
