Philly’s Steakhouse, Marrero, LA Report #446

Sorry I’ve been away for awhile. I had COVID. Besides having to quarantine to keep people safe from me, I kind of lost my appetite. For me, THAT is a fate worse than DEATH. But I’ve recovered now, and I’m ready to do a bunch of make up eating!

I love Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. I had one at a famous place on South St. in Philadelphia maybe 25 years ago. Can’t remember the name of the place. I’ll never forget watching this old guy make them. He was standing in front of a huge griddle, with a big vat of thin sliced beef to his right, and a big vat of sliced onions to his left. He’d throw the onions on the left side of the grill and the beef on the right side of the grill. Then, with two big spatulas, he’d continuously chop everything toward the middle. By the time they met in the middle they’d be cooked! Then he’d make the sandwiches, which were delicious.

Well, I’ve heard good things about this place so I figured I’d come give them a try. I decided to keep it simple and I ordered the #1. I wanted to keep it as close to the real Philly deal as possible.

I was asked if I wanted peppers and onions. I said, “yes”. Then I was asked if I wanted cheese. I was glad they didn’t ask what kind. I’m not sure what’s “traditional”, so I just said yes again. Then I was asked if I wanted it dressed with lettuce and tomatoes. I’m pretty sure that’s not a Philly, but a New Orleans thing, but I like it! So I got it.

Delicious sandwich! The beef was nice and tender, seasoned very well, and the bread was soft and fresh. The fries were also great. No silly batter or seasoning on them. Just plain potatoes fried crisp and lightly salted.
