Café Normandie, New Orleans, LA Report #696

This place is located inside the Higgins Hotel right across the street from the World War II Museum. In the third picture above I used my excellent and advanced computer graphic skills to illustrate that. I’ve been in here once before. They also have a restaurant and bar called Rosie’s on the Roof, which is up on the roof! Great food and great view.

I received an email about brunch places is New Orleans and this restaurant was on the list. I had never heard of it, so I looked at the menu and saw a braised short rib over gouda cheese grits dish. I immediately made reservations for today. I had to give that a try!

Beautiful place. Nice looking bar right next to the restaurant. I love the fleur de lis on the back of the very comfy chairs.

The brunch menu was one page. Great. Here’s a link if you want to check out the rest of their menus: https://www.higginshotelnola.com/new-orleans-restaurants/cafe-normandie

Unfortunately, after eating about 10 pounds of beef at a Korean BBQ joint last night, the last thing I wanted to eat this morning was beef. Fortunately, my dining partner did. She ordered the short rib and I went with the crawfish omelet and breakfast potatoes.

———— THE FOOD ————

Braised Short Rib
Crawfish Omelet
Toast

My dining partner said the short rib dish was absolutely delicious! For some reason she started eating it with a spoon and was impressed the meat was so tender she could cut it with that. She was nice enough to let me taste a couple shreds of beef with a few grains of grits and I agree. It was a delicious dish.

My crawfish omelet on the other hand was very forgettable. Nothing on the plate tasted like it was freshly made. The omelet was pretty hard without many crawfish in it, and the potatoes were leathery instead of crisp. If you told me both were taken pre-prepared out of plastic bags from the fridge and heated in the microwave, I could believe it.

The toast was good! And the butter was nice and soft.

Also, the service was pretty lacking and the place was pretty empty. I asked our waitress for two things and all I got was apologies for not getting either one of them.

There you have it. If you decide to come in go with the short rib.
