********** PERMANENTLY CLOSED **********
I first ate at a Mellow Mushroom somewhere in southern Alabama maybe15 years ago and fell in love with it. It was a long time before they opened this location in Metairie and they also have a location in Uptown New Orleans now. This one is located on the top floor of a small shopping center called “The Forum”, where you could also buy some camping gear, get a massage, trade some stocks and pick up a cake before enjoying your pizza!
Nice and roomy inside with a big bar and musical themed décor, complete with trumpet lights over each booth. Each booth also has a TV with remote so you could watch whatever you want. Being it’s football season the rest of the TVs in the place were tuned to one NFL game.
The menu offers a lot more than pizzas. The build your own salad section has a huge selection of things to concoct your own salad, as does the build your own pizza section. They also offer calzones, hogies and burgers.
For appetizers we tried a salad, the pretzel bites and the meatball trio. Loved the shaved parm on the house salad, and you could tell the blue cheese dressing was either house made, or if out a bottle a high quality brand. One problem with the pretzel bites. They weren’t pretzels! They were chunks of fried pizza dough. Still pretty good, however the beer cheese dip was pretty watery. Now the meatball trio was excellent. Again, shaved parmesan cheese, basil, a delicious marinara and they were stuffed with a slice of mozzarella. Delicious.
Instead of building our own pizza we tried a couple of the specialty pizzas. If you’re a mushroom lover like me the Holy Shiitake Pie is a must! Shitake, button and Portobello mushrooms all on one pizza! With caramelized onions and black truffle oil. What could be better? It’s delicious.
The Mighty Meat pizza has pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham and Applewood smoked bacon on it. I love the way they leave the bacon in slices instead of crumbling it. Very good.
For dessert you have a choice of two cookies. We tried the Giant Gourmet Cookie. It doesn’t look pretty but it sure tasted pretty good. And I don’t really care for cookies.
Also, they offer seafood pizzas during lent for Catholics not eating meat. I think there was also an oyster pizza on the menu. Of course you don’t have to be Catholic to try one! Last year I tried their shrimp pizza and it was great.
Great place. I definitely recommend it.
