Ben’s Burgers, Metairie, LA Report #199

I was very sad when the only location of Bud’s Broiler in the city of New Orleans closed down.  Then, I was happy to hear they were reopening not far from their original location.  I love Bud’s Broiler.  And now I LOVE this place!

This place actually used to be a Bud’s Broiler until they broke away from the chain, but basically kept all the same food.  And it’s delicious!  They’re open 24/7, and everything is cooked over a charcoal fire.

The menu isn’t long or complex, and unlike most burger places you can grab a cold beer to go with your meal.

At Bud’s I used to like the #4, which was a burger with their hickory sauce or chili and cheddar cheese.  Here, that’s a #2.  That’s important.  Don’t forget it.  We decided on a #2 with chili and the “Special”, which is a double cheeseburger dressed with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, bacon, fry sauce (I ate it and I’m still not sure what it is), and chili cheese fries! For good measure we added a hot dog with chili, fries, onion rings and a vanilla milkshake.

Everything was delicious!  One warning about the Special though.  Unless you can unhinge your jaw like a snake eating a rabbit, your going to have trouble biting it.  Fortunately I can!  The last three pictures are the Special, the Special cut in half, and the hot dog cut in half.  Not sure why they slice the hot dog up like that but it’s good!

I loved the fries.  No stupid batter or seasoned coating on them.  Just plain, crispy fried potatoes.  The onion rings are thick slices of onion with minimum batter.  Really good.

I highly recommend this place!

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT:

Back to Ben’s today. And I had The Big Ben again. I had to pry that thing out of the container with a fork, then cut it in half to make it more manageable! It’s still just as delicious. Go get one! Open 24/7.

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT:

Back today. One significant development to report. They’re not open 24/7 anymore. But 7 days a week, 11am-11pm.

I never noticed they had whole wheat buns before. Today I had the #2 with chili, my dining partner had the #4, and we split a #6 and large order of fries. I also had a medium vanilla milkshake.

@ FOOD @

I stuck a straw in the vanilla milk shake but that was useless. It was so think I had to pop the top open and stick a spoon in it. It was great.

The burgers were delicious as always, but I thought they seemed smaller. I asked my dining partner if I was imagining things, but she said nope. They were definitely smaller.

My stomach agreed. After knocking off a burger, medium milkshake, a half large order of fries, and half a hot dog, I should have been stuffed. I wasn’t. Pleasantly satisfied, but I could have eaten more! I do happen to be a big eater though.

SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT:

I am devastated. Came in today for one of their Ben special burgers, but most of all those delicious fries. This is what I got:

The burger was good, but look closely at that fry I’m holding. It’s got some kind crust, or coating on it. They abandoned their plain fried potatoes for these terrible things. Tis a sad day.

FINAL REPORT!

I have a Facebook page I post my reports on. I mentioned the fires on it asking Ben’s jokingly why this happened? They gave me a pretty petulant response!

If I had received a response saying something like, “We’re having supply chain issues, but fear not. Our regular fries will be back soon!”, I would have said, “Great! Looking forward to it”! But after that response I’m not looking forward to it. I won’t be patronizing Ben’s anymore.
